The challenge
The research group of Dr. Frederic Bartumeus at CEAB needed to track small, fast-moving organisms — ant colonies and C. elegans — across long, unattended recording sessions, extracting precise position and trajectory data without a research assistant manually annotating every frame.
The solution
Winkoms built a multi-organism tracking line for CEAB starting in 2017, evolving through several tracker generations and three GUI frameworks (wxPython → Kivy → PySide6). The current 2026 iteration adds an AI-assisted segmentation and labeling pipeline: each organism is contour-segmented frame by frame, with centroid position logged automatically — no manual annotation needed.
